Ivan Montoro
How it Happened
Ivan Montoro's early goal was the difference in the Rhode Island men's soccer team's 1-0 defeat of Holy Cross on Tuesday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
Montoro's game-winner came in the eighth minute when a member of the Crusaders' back line tried to play a ball back to his keeper and slipped. With the Rams putting pressure on the opposing defenders, Montoro was in perfect position to steal the ball and scored on an empty net, as Holy Cross' Tristan Stephani was well outside the box.
Rhody continued to maintain control for the remaining length of the first half, earning an 8-1 advantage in shots and putting three on goal.
The Crusaders' best chance to tie the score came in the 60th minute when Ethan Gill went one-on-one with
Edu Rodriguez, but Rhode Island's keeper came off his line and made the highlight reel save.
The home team had a few more chances to expand its lead down the stretch, earning a pair of corner kicks and a free kick just outside the box within in the final 15 minutes but the Rams were unable to add any additional goals.
Inside the Box Score
- Both freshman Nate Yurkovic and redshirt freshman Brett Schwab made their first career starts.
- Junior Ivan Montoro's goal was his first of the season and the third of his career. He has scored one in each of his three years suiting up for the Rams.
- Junior Edu Rodriguez posted his second shutout of the season. He has conceded just two goals in 312 minutes between the sticks.
- The heroic save that Rodriguez made against Gill was his only stop of the night.
- Junior Íñigo Etxegarai took a game-high five shots, more than the entire Crusaders' roster took all night.
- Rhody finished the night with a 14-3 advantage in shots, the second most it has taken all season. The team fired off 18 opposite Stonehill (Aug. 27).
- The shutout was URI's fourth in five matches. Last season, the Rams had four shutouts in 16 matches.
