How it Happened
Dayton defender Hjalti Sigurdsson netted a hat trick to propel the Flyers to a 6-0 victory over Rhode Island in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams Saturday night.
Sigurdsson scored twice in the first half off of set pieces. In the 25th minute, a Dayton corner was headed twice before the ball reached Sigurdsson, who got a third head on the ball for the 1-0 lead. In the 40th minute, a free kick found its way to Joseph Melto Quiah, who crossed to Sigurdsson, who finished the play into the lower right corner.
With Rhody struggling to put together any offense, the Flyers poured it on in the second half. A defensive miscommunication between URI keeper
Edu Rodriguez and back
Vetle Nilsen led to an unassisted goal for Melto Quiah in the 58th minute. He scored again 94 seconds later off an assist from Manny Day.
Late goals from Kenji Mboma Dem in the 72nd minute and Sigurdsson in the 85th minute capped the scoring.
