How It Happened
Rhode Island struggled to get its offense going until the third set as it was swept at George Washington Saturday, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 37-35). After getting just nine kills combined in the first two sets, the Rams doubled that output with 18 kills in the third, but it was not enough to extend the match.
Set One - George Washington 25, Rhode Island 15
Rhode Island hit -0.038 as a team, getting seven kills while committing eight attack errors in the opening frame. The host Revolutionaries also had seven kills, but made just two errors. GW's efficiency keyed an 8-1 run that turned a 13-9 lead into a 21-10 advantage. From there the teams traded points until a Liv Womble kill ended the set.
Set Two – George Washington 25, Rhode Island 21
Despite a closer score, Rhode Island's struggles on the attack worsened, as the Rams had two kills and six errors in the second set. Even with the offensive issues, URI held a 21-15 lead following a GW attack error. After a timeout, the Revolutionaries ran off 10 straight points. MC Daubendiek had four kills during the extended run. Â
Set Three - George Washington 37, Rhode Island 35
The longest set in program history finally saw the Rams put together a decent attack, but it was too little, too late. Despite nine kills from
Madi Disu and four more from
Chloe Abuto, Rhode Island could not extend the match. The set feature 24 ties and nine lead changes, but GW closed out the sweep with back-to-back kills from Liv Womble and Elizabeth Drelling.
