How it Happened
Forced to play a man down for the majority of the match, Rhode Island suffered its first loss of the 2023 season on Monday night at the URI Soccer Complex, dropping a 2-1 result to in-state rival Providence College.
The Rams had a solid chance to force a draw when
Mathias Taylor netted his first career goal in the 80th minute and tied the score up at 1-1, but a strike by the Friars within the final two minutes allowed the visitors to emerge triumphant.
The rivalry match was chippy from the start, as a combined five fouls were whistled in the opening 10 minutes before a Rhode Island red card and a pair of Friar yellows were issued in the 12th minute. Despite being limited to just 10 players on the field, Rhody maintained momentum in the opening half, outshooting its opponent 5-3.
After holding the one-player advantage for 51 minutes, Providence finally scored when a ball off of a corner kick was deflected into the net by Cole Dewhurst. The shot ended a 332-minute shutout streak for the Rams, who had previously held Connecticut (Aug. 19), Quinnipiac (Aug. 24) and Harvard (Sept. 1) to zeros.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Rams had numerous chances to retaliate but were finally able to do so when
Nate Yurkovic delivered a ball into the box that found Taylor's head and rocketed past the Friars' diving keeper.
Providence kept the pressure on after the equalizer, spending most of the remaining 10 minutes in its scoring third of the field before utilizing a corner kick to net the game-winner when Brendan McSorley scored off an assist by Pearce O'Brien.
