How It Happened
Rhode Island used a dominant third quarter to pave the way for its fifth straight victory as the Rams beat St. Bonaventure 65-41 Saturday afternoon.
Rhode Island's trio of Mayé Touré, Sophie Phillips and Dee Dee Davis combined for 19 of the team's 22 first-quarter points. The Rams (11-5, 3-0 A-10) forced eight turnovers, which led to eight points for URI. However, the visiting Bonnies (4-10, 1-2 A-10) shot 7-of-9 from the field, helping St. Bonaventure keep the game close. By the end of the opening quarter, Rhody led 22-15.
The Rams struggled with ball control in the second quarter, turning it over eight times, including six in the first five minutes. That allowed St. Bonaventure to start the period on a 9-0 run and take a 24-22 lead by the 4:31 mark of the quarter, the Bonnies' first lead of the day.
The teams went back and forth in the final minutes of the half. Anaelle Dutat hit a putback at the buzzer to send the teams into the break tied at 29-29.
Rhode Island came out on fire to start the second half. After the teams traded baskets, URI went on an 8-0 run in a 57-second span that included a Touré layup, a four-point play by Phillips and a fastbreak  layup by Teisha Hyman that opened a 39-31 lead for the Rams.
That was the start of an overall 15-0 run. By the time Phillips hit her fifth 3-pointer of the afternoon, Rhode Island was ahead 46-31 and had command of the game.
Rhode Island's lead never dipped below 12 points in the final quarter as the Rams cruised to the win.
