How it Happened
St. Bonaventure stunned Rhode Island 2-1, picking up its first Atlantic 10 win in the process Thursday.
It was URI jumping out early when it took advantage of a St. Bonaventure turnover just three minutes into the match. When a Bonnies player slipped with the ball at her feet,
Tierra Garniss alertly stepped to the ball and sent a pass to the right side of the box for
Sam Hagerty, who then sent a cross all the way through several bodies in the box.
Lauren MacDonald was there on the back side to fire a left-footed shot into the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the 17th minute, it was St. Bonaventure capitalizing on a Rhody mistake. A long ball by the Bonnies drew URI keeper
Chelsea Mohammed well outside the box. She attempted to clear the bouncing ball, but instead sent a grounder to the foot of St. Bonaventure's Torrie Grant-Clavijo, who immediately sent a long strike on target. Mohammed was unable to get back in position in time to prevent the tying goal.
With 20 minutes on the clock, Rhody defender
Emma Kirkpatrick lined a shot from outside the box that just went over the crossbar. Moments later, Garniss slid a pass by St. Bonaventure keeper Chiara Gottinger, but her shot went just outside the far post. The flurry continued, and Garniss found the back of the net with 17 minutes to go, but she was flagged for being offsides before the shot.
It was the Bonnies taking advantage of another URI mistake with just under 16 minutes remaining. Mohammed was given a yellow card for picking up a back pass from
Allison Gilbert, giving St. Bonaventure an indirect kick inside the box. Thea Juul slipped a low shot past the wall and into the corner of the net for the game winner.
