How It Happened
A frustrating result put a dent into Rhode Island's postseason hopes as the Rams fell to Massachusetts 2-1 Saturday night.
Despite applying heavy pressure in the UMass end for much of the match, Rhode Island could not get more than one goal. The Rams outshot the Minutemen 20-8, but it was to no avail.
Rhody got in front early with a goal by
Keegan Walker in the 17th minute.
Brandon Bermingham set up the goal with a hard shot that was stopped by UMass keeper Alex Geczy. The ball deflected right to Walker, who fired the rebound into the net.
UMass was able to tie the score with 8:08 to go in the first half. Oliver Akintade sent a cross through the box and found the Atlantic 10's leading scorer, Alec Hughes. Hughes lined a shot for his 11th goal of the season.
Walker nearly gave the Rams a lead in the 53rd minute. He snuck a low shot through a trio of UMass defenders, but Geczy made a diving stop to his left to keep the match tied. A couple minutes later, Bermingham had a strong shot off a pass in the box from Íñigo Etxegarai, but Geczy was in position for the save.
It was Massachusetts breaking the tie in the 65th minute. A free kick by Matt Cence found the foot of Aidan Kelly, who was able to slip a shot past
Edu Rodriguez for a 2-1 lead. The goal proved to be the difference.
