How it Happened
One of the biggest scoring outbursts in program history led Rhode Island to a 6-0 destruction of Richmond Thursday night.
It tied the fifth-highest goal total in program history. The Rams scored their most goals since an 8-2 victory over Vermont in 2005, a span of 19 seasons.
Rhode Island started the onslaught by capitalizing on an early scrum. Coming off the first URI corner kick of the day, the ball bounced high in the air after Richmond keeper McKenna Dalfonso punched the ball straight up. URI's
Nicolette Scarduzio got her head on the ball and put it on net. A clearance attempt off the end line was deflected into the next by
Courtney Poon in the 12th minute.
The Rams exploded for three goals in a span of less than five minutes to take full control. Poon padded the lead in the 34th minute when she scored on a cross from
Sarah Yee. Yee took a pass from
Sam Hagerty into the corner and lined a pass to Poon for her second goal of the night. Exactly two minutes later, Hagerty sent a cross to
Tierra Garniss in front of the net, and Garniss was able to flick the ball with the back of her heel for a three-goal lead. In the 39th minute, a cross by
Kaia Rice was knocked into the Richmond goal by defender Gwen Howell, who was trying to fend off
Francesca Highton.
Rhody continued the onslaught in the second half. In the 54th minute
Cristina Sallent lofted a corner kick perfectly into the box, and
Mie Carstensen knocked it home for the fifth goal of the night. Sallent grabbed another assist moments later when her crossed was tapped home by Garniss, who scored for the second time.
