RHODE ISLAND VS. BROWN - SERIES NOTES
- The Rams and the Bears will face each other for the 108th time in their shared history, which dates back to 1909, on Saturday afternoon at Meade Stadium.
- Though Brown leads the overall series 73-32-2, Rhody has more Governor's Cup victories (22-19) since the first introduction of the trophy back in 1981.
- URI has won five straight games against Brown, outscoring the opposition 196-92 in the spread.
- Since head coach Jim Fleming joined the team in 2014, Rhode Island has lost just one home game to the Bears, falling 20-13 in his debut season.
- Last year's meeting was an instant classic, with the Rams outlasting the host Bears 34-30 in Providence (Oct. 7).
- In a game that had six lead changes in the first half alone, it ended up coming down to the fourth quarter where a key interception by former Freshman All-American Syeed Gibbs (transfer - Georgia Tech) was the difference.
- Linebacker A.J. Pena was the anchor bearer in the contest and had six tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and one pass break up.
THE GOVERNOR'S CUP
- A Saturday win for the Rams would make them the first team to hold on to the Governor's Cup for six straight years.
- Both Rhode Island and Brown have retained the Cup for a five-game stretch, with URI doing so from 1988-93 and the Bears achieving the feat from 2011-15.
- Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee will be in attendance to present the cup to the winning team.
- Twenty-one Rhody players hail from the Ocean State. Beyond that, five call the capital city home in wide receiver Marquis Buchanan, defensive back Fredrick Mallay, defensive back Seun Filaoye, defensive lineman Tosin Akinsulire and defensive lineman Bless Nyanneh.
- Buchanan, running back Gabe Sloat, defensive lineman Westley Neal, Jr. and linebacker A.J. Pena represented the team at the annual Governor's Cup press conference on Wednesday at the Rhode Island State House.
HOME SWEET HOME
- Saturday's game will be Rhode Island's first at Meade Stadium in just about a month.
- Rhody's last home game was back on Sept. 14 when the team knocked off CAA Football foe Campbell, 21-9.
- The Rams have gone 4-1 at home in each of the past three seasons.
GETTING THE GROUND GAME GOING
- Rhode Island's run game has been a major factor in the team's success over the past few weekends, increasing its momentum across the spread.
- After running the ball for 210 yards at LIU (Sept. 21), the Rams topped the performance with 273 rushing yards at Hampton.
- Last year, URI surpassed 200 rushing yards in just two games against North Carolina A&T (286; Nov. 11) and Maine (206; Sept. 15).
- Rhode Island's running backs also added a total of three touchdowns during the game against the Pirates, while quarterback Devin Farrell also had one of his own.
- Deon Silas found the end zone twice for his first two touchdowns as a Ram and Malik Grant added one.
- The last time Rhody had four rushing touchdowns in a game was during the win over No. 20 New Hampshire last season (Oct. 28).
- A Sacred Heart transfer, Grant leads the unit with 434 rushing yards on 69 carries.
- He has four rushing touchdowns, with a long run of 55 yards, and has logged over 100 yards in back-to-back games.
