How It Happened
A trio of second-half goals lifted host Duquesne over Rhode Island for a 3-0 victory in a match between two of the stronger teams in the Atlantic 10 Wednesday night.
The host Dukes scored twice in a span of three minutes late in the match after Rhode Island was forced to play a man down.
Duquense broke through in the 63rd minute when Jaxon Ervin was taken down in the box while chasing down a long pass through the middle of the pitch. A penalty kick was awarded, and Dakota Jonke put it into the lower corner for a 1-0 lead. The lead nearly doubled moments later when Hopfer headed a shot on net, but
Edu Rodriguez made a diving save to keep it a one-goal match.
Duquense padded its lead in the 77th minute. Bennetzen fired a long laser off an assist from Jonke, finding the upper corner for a 2-0 lead. Hopfer flicked a shot past Rodriguez three minutes later for a 3-0 lead that put the match away.
