How It Happened
Rhode Island (9-21, 4-13 Atlantic 10) was officially eliminated from postseason contention as it fell in four sets at Davidson Friday night. The host Wildcats (14-14, 10-7 A-10) controlled play from the outset, defeating Rhody 25-12, 25-21, 21-25, 25-13.
Set One – Davidson 25, Rhode Island 12
The host Wildcats came out on fire, recording 19 kills with two attack errors in the opening set. Davidson hit .531 as a team, never letting Rhody get going.
Set Two – Davidson 25, Rhode Island 21
It was a far more competitive set, but a late run by Davidson put Rhody in a two-set hole. With the score tied 15-15, the Wildcats went on a 6-1 run to open a five-point lead. Rhody responded with a 5-1 run of its own that featured two kills from
Emma Vente and one from
Havyn Rolle as URI pulled within one at 22-21. Davidson called timeout and proceeded to score the final three points of the set to go ahead 2-0 in sets.
Set Three – Rhode Island 25, Davidson 21
Davidson scored nine of the first 11 points in the third set to take a commanding lead, but Rhody fought back and took an 18-15 lead after a 7-0 run. Davidson got the score to 20-18, but a pair of
Havyn Rolle kills sandwiched around an
Andrea Owens kills gave the Rams six set points at 24-18. Eventually a service error by the Wildcats extended the match.
Set Four – Davidson 25, Rhode Island 13
Rhode Island could not maintain its momentum, committing six attack errors while recording just five kills in the final set. Davidson took 16 of the first 22 points to build a double-digit lead and cruised from there.
Inside the Box
- Freshman Havyn Rolle set a career high with 17 kills and was the lone Ram in double figures.
- Senior setter Katie Butler had a double-double, recording 20 assists and 12 digs.
- Freshman Dakota Henry had 11 digs, while senior Edie Lamoreaux added nine.
- Sophomore Chloe Abuto had six kills with just one error.
- Davidson had 62 kills, compared to 44 for URI.
