How it HappenedÂ
For the first time since Frank Keaney's final season as head coach 77 years ago, Rhode Island is 8-0 to start a season. The Rams knocked off Yale 84-78 Monday night.
Rhody trailed the Bulldogs (4-5) by seven points with less than a minute to go in the first half, but
David Green made two 3-pointers in the final 25 seconds of the period to spark the team. His final trey of the half fell through the net at the buzzer, trimming URI's deficit to one point at 35-34.
The momentum carried into the second half, as
Sebastian Thomas got himself on track. After scoring two points in the first half, he dropped 18 in the second half, including the 1,000th point of his career.
Despite better energy, Rhody was down five with 11 minutes to go. A 14-2 run that featured five points by
David Fuchs, a 3-pointer from Green and a hoop-and-harm three-point play by
Jamarques Lawrence put URI up 65-58. Thomas punctuated the run with a 3-pointer of his own, and Rhody led the rest of the way.
With Thomas (10-for-10) and
Jaden House (4-for-4) leading the way, Rhody went 20-of-22 at the line in the second half to pull out the victory.
