How it Happened
A last-second shot to win the game bounced off the rim as a late rally came up just short for Rhode Island in an 81-79 loss at Massachusetts Sunday afternoon.

UMass (15-8, 6-5 Atlantic 10) led by 14 points with just 5:36 to go. The Minutemen built the lead with their perimeter game, shooting 7-of-12 from the arc in the second half. Rahsool Diggins scored 18 points, all of which came from the outside, where he was 6-for-11 on the day. When it wasn't Diggins from the outside, Keon Thompson hurt the Rams with backdoor cuts and drives to the hoop, as he had 14 of his 16 points in the second half.

Despite the late deficit, Rhode Island (11-13, 5-6 A-10) gave themselves a chance at the end. An 11-0 run that featured a pair of Jaden House 3-pointers and two drives by Luis Kortright got Rhody within two at 74-72 with 1:56 to go. UMass responded with a 6-0 run to get the lead back to eight points, but URI clawed back again.

Kortright scored seven straight points for the Rams to get it back to a one-possession contest. His 3-pointer with six seconds left made it a two-point game. UMass missed two free throws with four second to go, and URI got the rebound and outlet up the floor to Kortright. UMass had the paint defended, and Kortright managed a look from the top of the key, but the shot bounced off the rim, as the Minutemen escaped with the victory.
