Late Rally Not Enough for Rams in 9-7 Loss

How It Happened
A late comeback attempt came up just short as Rhode Island lost 9-7 to Northern Kentucky on the final day of the Wofford Invitational Sunday morning.

Similar to the season opener for URI, the Rams (1-4) found themselves in a big hole early. Northern Kentucky (4-6) scored four times in the bottom of the first inning and led 8-2 through five innings.

Rhody broke through in the top of the sixth. Cassie Swenson drew a one-out walk and Skyler Rapuano followed with a single. Hannah Hernandez reached on a bunt single, and an error on the play allowed Swenson to score while Rapuano and Hernandez wound up in scoring position. Kylie Bulinski lofted a sacrifice fly to bring Rapuano in.

Zoe Rensel reached on a dropped pop up, which brought in Hernandez to make the score 8-5. Emily Power singled through the left side. Pinch hitter Elena Gonzalez followed with a two-run double to bring pinch runner Maddie Melice and Power around to close the gap to one.

Northern Kentucky added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame. URI continued to battle and had the potential tying run at the plate with two outs, but a flyout ended the game.
