Early Deficit Dooms Rams in Loss at Gardner-Webb

How It Happened
A late surge was not enough for Rhode Island as it lost 7-4 at Gardner-Webb Monday morning to bring its season-opening road trip to a close.

As has been the case often in the early part of the season, Rhode Island (1-5) found itself in an immediate hole. Gardner-Webb (7-3) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, getting RBI singles from Araceli Pesqueira and Annicka McLaughlin. The Bulldogs added three more in the second inning on a two-run home run by Adrienne Visintine and a run-scoring double off the bat of Taylor Dreher.

Rhode Island had the makings of a rally in the top of the fourth when Elena Gonzalez and Cassie Swenson had back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. However, two strikeouts and a groundout brought the threat to an end.

Gardner-Webb managed single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Rams managed four runs in the top of the seventh. Mandi Hanewich drove in a run with a groundout, and Leilyn Alvarez drilled a three-run home run to make things interesting, but that was as close as it got.
