How it Happened
A slew of crooked numbers caused Rhode Island Baseball to lose its series finale at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 15-1 on Monday evening.

The Rams (1-2) struggled in all areas of the game, cranking out just four hits while committing a pair of errors in addition to the 17 hits that their staff let up.

Though the Vaqueros (2-1) were first to strike, using an RBI double to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Rhody tied it up in the third when Reece Moroney plated Jack Hopko with a single to center field. By the end of the frame, UTRGV had regained its lead at 6-1 thanks to another base hit and a three-run homer.

URI's best chance to get back in the game came in the sixth inning when Michael Anderson, Anthony DePino and Eric Genther drew walks to load the bases. The home team made a call to the bullpen and the new arm struck out all three batters he faced to end the threat.

After retaking the lead, the Vaqueros never looked back and added four runs in the fourth, another four in the sixth and a final run in the seventh.

Starting arm Sean Sposato (0-1), who exited the game after three innings of work, was tagged with the loss.

Inside the Box Score
  • In his collegiate debut, freshman AJ Jones struck out the side in the eighth inning. He recorded two backward Ks before taking the final batter down swinging.
  • Freshman Reece Moroney drove in the team's only run, finishing the day 1-for-4.
  • He has recorded a hit in each of his first three collegiate games.
  • Sophomore Jack Hopko was 1-for-3 and scored once.
  • Both redshirt junior Rob Butler and freshman Scott Penney went 1-for-3 at the plate.
  • Freshman Joe Sabbath made his first appearance as a Ram and threw one inning. He struck out one batter and gave up a run.
