How It Happened
The early season struggled continued for Rhode Island (1-14) as the Rams dropped a pair of game at the Cathi Maynard Invitational Sunday. The Rams lost 4-0 to Akron in the morning before falling 6-3 to host Austin Peay in the later game.
Game 1 – Akron 4, Rhode Island 0
The first inning was once again an issue for Rhody. Akron's first two batters – Brooke Sivek and Lee Meagan – reached on bunt singles, then the Zips (7-10) executed a double steal to get both into scoring position. After an out was recorded, Morgan Sizemore singled to left to bring Sivek in. With runners on the corners, pinch runner Haley Glass stole second base. A sacrifice fly by Sophia Wygast drove in Meagan for a 2-0 lead.
The Rams (1-12) loaded the bases with two down in the top of the third, but they could not get any runs.
Casey Miller had back-to-back singles with one out, and
Skyler Rapuano drew a two-out walk. However, a groundout by
Zoe Rensel ended the opportunity.
Akron added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Both came with two outs, with a Rhody error allowing the second to come across unearned.
Rhody only managed two more base runners over the final four innings. It was
Emily Power both times, as she singled in the fourth and drew a walk in the seventh. However, URI was unable to score as it was shut out for the fourth time in 14 games.
Game 2 – Austin Peay 6, Rhode Island 3
A two-run double by Macee Roberts keyed a three-run third inning, and the Governors (12-9) added a fourth run an inning later.
Rhode Island got one back in the top of the fifth.
Vicki Viaclovsky drove in
Emily Power with an RBI groundout. Austin Peay came right back with one in the bottom of the frame to again make it a four-run game at 5-1.
The Rams pieced together a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning.
Skyler Rapuano singled and
Natalie Maleitzke caught a break when she struck out but reached on a passed ball. A walk to Power loaded the based for
Elena Gonzalez, who singled through the right side to score Rapuano and Maleitzke and trim the lead to two runs. That was as close as Rhody got, as Austin Peay padded the lead with a run in the sixth.
