How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball dropped both of its games in a doubleheader at Washington State on Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field, going down 10-4 before falling 17-7 via run rile.
Despite the losses, the day was highlighted by a pair of home runs off the bat of
Anthony DePino that lifted him to the top of URI's (1-7) career record book. With 32, he now stands alone as the all-time leader ahead of Mike Le Bel (30, 2009-13).
Game One - Washington State 10, Rhode Island 4
The teams attempted to kick off the series on Friday but were snowed out with Washington State (7-3) up 1-0 and two outs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. When the game resumed on Saturday as part of the doubleheader,
Connor Grotyohann was on the mound for the Rams and struck out the first batter he faced.
Rhode Island took a 3-1 lead in the following frame, getting a pair of runs off of
Brody Levin's double before adding another on an RBI single from
Reece Moroney. The advantage was URI's only one of the contest, as Washington State stormed back in its half with four runs scored on a pair of doubles and a sac fly.
The Cougars added another tally in the bottom of the fourth and though Rhody got one back in the sixth when
Michael Anderson crossed home plate on a groundout, the home team tacked on four more over the next two to put the game away.
All but three of WSU's 10 runs were earned, as the Rams committed two errors.
Game Two - Washington State 17, Rhode Island 7 (7 inn.)
The Rams made it interesting with a mid-game push but were ultimately run-ruled by the Cougars in game two.
Washington State struck first, using an RBI single to jump out 1-0 in the opening frame. Two innings later, DePino responded for URI with a solo shot out to left field that tied up the score but the Cougars answered with a three-spot in their half to regain the advantage. It was the final inning for starting arm
Sean Sposato, who had previously put up two zeros.
The Cougars went on to add another six runs to their lead to go up 10-1 by the end of the fifth, though a passed ball and a pair of throwing errors enabled the spree.
Over the next two frames, Rhode Island scored a total of six runs to narrow the deficit down to three. DePino drove in three during the push, first plating Anderson with a single in the sixth before leaving the yard in the seventh and scooping up the designated hitter once again.
Scott Penney (double) and
Michael Borrelli (single) also drove runners in.
Though momentum seemed to favor the visiting team, the Cougars broke away with seven runs to once again secure the victory.
Zach Morris,
Ethan Mahan and Brendan Hsu were all tagged in the game-ending frame.
