How it Happened
The Rhode Island baseball team failed to prevent the series sweep at Saint Louis, falling 7-3 in Sunday afternoon's finale at the Billiken Sports Complex.
The Rams (5-16, 0-3 Atlantic 10) trailed for the entirety of the contest, scoring all three of their runs in the fourth inning. Saint Louis (19-6, 3-0 A-10) hung crooked numbers in the third and fourth before adding a run in the seventh to reach its total.
URI had plenty of chances offensively, recording nine total hits, but struggled to get into scoring position as just four players reached second base outside of the fourth-frame scoring spurt.
Michael Anderson began the kick with a sac fly that drove in
Reece Moroney before an
Anthony DePino double and a single off the bat of
Will Hindle plated an additional two runners.
The push handed Rhode Island a 3-2 lead, as a two-run homer had put SLU ahead in the bottom of the third. Rhody's advantage was unfortunately short-lived. The Billikens forced a tie when a batter was hit with the bases loaded and later brought in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice. In the following at-bat, a two-run double made it a 6-3 game.
Both sides were relatively quiet down the stretch, with Saint Louis' final score coming in on a Rhody throwing error. The Rams stranded five runners on base over the last four innings.
