Brown Blanks Rams Twice

How It Happened
Rhode Island (7-27) continued to struggle offensively, getting shut out in both ends of a doubleheader sweep at in-state rival Brown Tuesday.

The host Bears (10-17) won the opening game 1-0 before ending things early with an 8-0 victory in five innings in the nightcap. It marked the first time since 2017 Brown has swept a doubleheader against Rhode Island.

Game 1 – Brown 1, Rhode Island 0
Macy Borowski (2-7) outdueled a pair of Rhody pitchers, twirling a two-hit gem for the Bears. Ashley Hibbard (2-3) was the tough-luck loser for the Rams, as she allowed just one run on three hits over five innings of work.

The lone run came in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Lily Berlinger drew a leadoff walk, Cameron Zytkewicz Ray delivered a one-out double to right center off of URI reliever Katie Zaun for the winning run.

Game 2 – Brown 8, Rhode Island 0 (5 inn.)
Brown used a steady attack, scoring at least once every inning to steadily pull away in the second game.

Jodie Aguirre (2-1) scattered five hits and struck out four batters as she held the Rams at bay. Lily Berlinger had two hits and three runs scored, while Dara English had two hits, three runs batted in and one run scored to carry the Brown offense.

Inside the Box Scores
  • Rhode Island has been shut out in each of its last three games, and five of the last six games overall.
  • The lone exception was a 2-1 win over Loyola Chicago in which both runs were scored in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • Freshman Zoe Rensel was the lone Ram with a hit in each game. She singled in the opener and added a double in the second game.
  • Graduate student Elena Gonzalez singled, was hit by a pitch and stole her 15th base of the season.
  • She is just the second Rhode Island player to steal 15 or more bases in two different seasons, joining Anne Kelsen.
  • Centerfielder Leilyn Alvarez robbed a home run off the bat of Brown's Laurel Moody in the first game, the second time this season she has prevented a home run by the opposition.
  • Sophomore Becca Zawistowski doubled in the second game.
  • Graduate student Sydney Yoder and sophomore Kylie Bulinski each singled in the second game.
What's Next
Rhode Island travels to Stonehill for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday, April 10. Both games will stream on NEC Front Row, beginning at 2 p.m.
