How it Happened
Rhode Island's 2024 season came to an end with a 5-3 loss at Dayton on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams (19-28, 11-13 A-10) entered the series finale needing a victory and a Massachusetts loss to Saint Louis in order to secure the seventh and final spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Dayton (32-20, 14-9 A-10) trailed for most of the game before scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to overtake its visitors. Regardless of the Flyer victory, URI still took the series having won the first two meetings.
The home team was first to strike, going up 2-0 over the course of the first three innings, stealing home and plating a run on a sac fly. Eventually, Rhody got on the board when
Jack Hopko cranked out a long single in the fourth that brought in
Connor Grotyohann. In the following frame,
Michael Anderson's two-run double put the Rams on top at 3-2.
Dayton quickly knotted the score back up, tagging up on another sac fly opposite reliever
Kenny Heon. The sidearm slinger went on to pitch two scoreless to keep his team in contention before Dayton broke through with a pair of RBI singles off of
Zach Fernandez in the eighth. Rhody went down in order in its final chance to regain the lead.
