How it Happened
Rhode Island dropped a 1-0 contest to in-state rival Providence in the season opener Thursday night.Â
The Rams applied pressure early, drawing a corner kick within the first two minutes of the the game. Rhody's efforts came up empty, as Friar keeper Emma Bodmer remained untested between the posts.
Providence struck first after Gillian Kenney found Kayla Briggs along the Rhody sideline. Briggs set up Kacey Lawrence with a shot that beat keeper Abby McCarthy in the 20th minute. The Friars entered halftime with the 1-0 lead.
Kaia Rice was able to get Rhody's first shot of the evening in the second half with a shot just out of the goalkeeper's reach. The shot sparked two more from McKenna Sylvester but it wasn't enough for the Rams as time expired.
