How it Happened
Rhode Island snapped a nine-match skid in the series against in-state rival and Ivy League power Brown, using a stout defense and opportunistic offense to blank the Bears 1-0 Friday night.
The visiting Bears – playing their first game of the season – were 12-3-2 last season, going a perfect 7-0 in Ivy League play. Brown was blanked just twice in 17 matches a year ago, averaging exactly 2.0 goals per match. However, Rhode Island stymied the Bears all night, limiting the visitors to just six shots on goal.
Rhody broke through in the 30th minute when
Sam Hagerty found the back of the net with assists from
Lauren MacDonald and
Emma Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick sent a pass up to MacDonald, who crossed the box to Hagerty.
Rhody keeper
Abby McCarthy made a diving stop on Brown's best chance of the opening half. Naya Cardoza got a low, hard shot off to McCarthy's right, but McCarthy was up to the task, smothering the attempt and keeping the Bears off the board.
In the 63rd minute, McCarthy came up big again. Brown's Layla Shell lofted a shot on net, but the captain punched it over the crossbar.
Brown's Kira Maguire lined a shot from the top of the box in the 81st minute, but it sailed just over the crossbar. From there, the defense largely kept pressure off the net en route to the win.
