How it Happened
Rhode Island jumped out to a big lead early and then fought off a hard-charging University of Victoria squad to win its second game at the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League 94-85 Wednesday.
The game was close through the first six minutes, as a hoop-and-harm three-point play by Victoria's Shadynn Smid pulled the Vikes within a point at 15-14. From there, Rhode Island went on a 16-0 run that included eight points by
David Green. Rhody's lead swelled to as many as 27 points in the opening half behind an efficient offense that saw URI shoot 65.5 percent from the field (19-of-29), 50.0 percent from the arc (6-of-12) and 81.3 percent at the line in the first 20 minutes.
On the other end of the floor, Rhody held Victoria to 37.9 percent from the field, including 4-15 from the arc. The defense effort helped the Rams to a 14-2 advantage in points off turnovers by halftime.
Led by guard Renoldo Robinson (18 points) and forward Ethan Boag (14 points), Victoria made a game of it by scoring 48 points in the second half. Robinson hit a layup and free throw with 2:20 to go to pull the Vikes within five at 90-85. However
Jaden House hit a layup with 1:53 to go and
Tyonne Farrell drained a pair of free throws with 40 seconds to go to stretch the lead back to nine.
Rhode Island did not allow a point over the final 2:20 as it put the game away.
