How it Happened
Rhode Island's nine-match unbeaten streak came to an end with a 2-0 loss to VCU in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams Friday night.
VCU struck early with a goal from Papa Toure in the 11th minute. The goal was assisted by Andrey Salmeron for the 1-0 lead. VCU applied pressure throughout the half, doubling up Rhody in total shots, 8-4. In the 30th minute, Kai Feng nearly added to the lead when he fired a shot that went just wide of the net.
The score stayed the same until the 66th minute when turned the ball over in its defensive end. VCU's Andres Rodriguez got the ball and found Mouhamed Tucker for the goal.
Inside the Box
- This was URI's first loss of the season. Rhody's last loss was a 3-1 defeat against VCU last Oct. 14.
- It snapped a streak of seven straight matches with at least one goal for Rhode Island. The last time Rhody was shutout was a 0-0 draw at Loyola Chicago on Oct. 21, 2023.
- Freshman Connor Froberg made his collegiate debut, playing 10 minutes as a reserve.
- Rhody had five total shots, with one on goal. It was the team's fewest this season. By comparison, VCU had 22 shots.
