How it Happened
Head coach
Tammi Reiss recorded her 100th victory with Rhode Island as the Rams dominated St. Bonaventure 82-48 Thursday afternoon. Reiss is the fastest to 100 wins in program history, reaching the milestone in her 160th game at the helm.
Rhode Island ((7-8, 2-0 Atlantic 10) used a dominant defensive effort to basically end the game in the first half. The Rams held St. Bonaventure (4-9, 0-2 A-10) to a dismal 3-for-28 (.107) from the field over the first two quarters, including 1-for-12 (.083) from 3-point range.
While the defense was smothering St. Bonaventure, the offense was scoring early and often on the other end. Rhody scored the first eight points of the game – five by
Sophie Phillips in the first 42 seconds - as part of a 12-2 run to start the game. The second quarter began even better, as Rhode Island scored the first 13 points of the second period to essentially put the game away early.
Center
Harsimran "Honey" Kaur led a strong offensive effort. The reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week nearly had a double-double by halftime, as she had 13 points, nine rebounds and two assists in the opening two quarters. URI shot 51.6 percent from the field (16-of-31) as it led 36-13 by halftime.
Both teams got going offensively in the third quarter, but Rhode Island maintained firm control throughout. Rhody outscored the Bonnies 21-20 in the period, pushing its lead to as many as 27 points on two occasions. An
Ines Debroise jumper made the score 57-30 late in the third.
The final outcome was never in doubt in the final period as Rhode Island cruised to its second conference win in as many games.
