How it HappenedÂ
Rhode Island handled George Washington 5-0 Thursday afternoon, cruising past the Revolutionaries for their fifth Atlantic 10 win.Â
On Rhode Island's first corner kick of the game, Lauren MacDonald's strike took a curve directly into the net for her fifth goal of the season. The Rams' defense held strong for the rest of the half, not allowing a single shot after the opening minute when George Washington recorded its only shot on goal.
Rhody doubled its lead in the second half off another corner. McKenna Sylvester sent a well-placed cross to the back post, where Mie Carstensen was waiting to tap in her fourth goal of the year.Â
MacDonald scored her second goal of the game in a late surge in the 81st minute, finding the back of the net to make it 3-0. Just five minutes later, McKenna Sylvester converted off a setup from Courtney Poon to extend the lead, before Megan Steinbach sealed the result with URI's fifth goal in the 89th minute.
Goalkeeper Dani Eden anchored another strong defensive effort, making a pair of key saves to secure the clean sheet.Â
