How it Happened
Saint Louis swept Rhode Island 27-25, 25-23, 25-15 to take both series matches over the weekend. URI (3-19, 0-9 Atlantic 10) battled in the first two sets, but came up just short. The host Billikens (10-10, 2-7 A-10) got back to .500 on the season with the win.
Set One - Saint Louis 27, Rhode Island 23
Neither side led by more than two points during the opening set, which featured an astounding 21 ties and eight lead changes. A kill by
Havyn Rolle gave Rhode Island set point at 24-23, and a block by
Erika Bracey and
Chloe Abuto gave the Rams a second set point at 25-24. Saint Louis fought off both instances. Consecutive kills by Tea Kalajdzic, Irmak Gokcen and Tamia Maddox gave the hosts the opening set.
Set Two - Saint Louis 25, Rhode Island 23
Despite an strong offensive output (14 kills, 2 errors, .364 attack percentage), Rhody could not tie the match. With the score tied 19-19, Saint Louis used a 5-2 run to set up a pair of set points. URI escaped the first one on an attack error by the Billikens, but a block by Irmak Gokcen and Justina Asamoa clinched the set for a 2-0 Saint Louis lead.
Set Three - Saint Louis 25, Rhode Island 15
The third set was all Saint Louis. Tamia Maddox took over, recording eight kills on 11 swings. She accounted for half of the Billikens 16 kills in the set.
