Pena Named Stats Perform FCS National Defensive Player of the Week

KINGSTON, R.I. - Linebacker A.J. Pena was named Stats Perform FCS National Player of the Week, Stats Perform announced Monday morning.

Pena recorded an FCS season-high four sacks, team-high six tackles, and forced a fumble in Rhode Island's 58-17 win at UAlbany on Saturday. Pena's four sacks brought his career total to 34.5, the most in program history passing Frank Ferrara's 33 from 1995-1998. This is the second recognition Pena has received after his performance against the Great Danes. He was also named CAA Football Co-Defensive Player of Week, the conference announced Monday.

Stats Perform named Pena a Preseason All-American this summer. Pena also earned All-American honors from Stats Perform at the conclusion of last season.

This is just the second time in program history that a Ram has earned National Player of the Week honors from Stats Perform, and the first time a Ram has received the honor for defense. Ahmere Dorsey was named Stats Perform Special Teams Player of the Week on Oct. 1, 2018.

Rhode Island hosts Bryant on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Meade Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on FloCollege.com and MeTV.
