How it Happened
Rhode Island played to a 1-1 draw at Loyola Chicago on Thursday night, earning a crucial point on the road. The result, combined with outcomes across the league, officially clinched the Rams a spot in the postseason.
Rhody controlled much of the first half, generating multiple early chances. Megan Steinbach and McKenna Sylvester each forced saves from Loyola goalkeeper Allison Deardorff within the first five minutes, while Lauren MacDonald added another shot on frame in the 11th minute. Despite an 8-6 edge in shots, the Rams could not capitalize before halftime. The teams went into the break knotted scoreless.
Loyola broke through in the 47th minute when Zoe Hevey fired a strike from outside the box that deflected off a Rhode Island defender and bounced past goalkeeper Dani Eden. The Rams quickly responded less than 10 minutes later after Sylvester was fouled in the box, and MacDonald converted the penalty to even the match at 1-1.
The Ramblers applied heavy pressure down the stretch with a series of corner kicks, but Rhode Island continued to counter through MacDonald and Nika Jacobs. Eden came up with multiple key saves in the closing minutes to preserve the draw and send the Rams home with a vital point.
