How it Happened
No. 4 Rhode Island scored a pair of first-half goals and then held off No. 5 VCU 2-1 in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship Friday night.

URI dominated the first 45 minutes and were peppering the VCU goal with shots. In the 34th minute, Lauren MacDonald lofted a shot into the upper corner for the first goal. A failed clearance by the VCU defense went right to MacDonald in the corner of the box. She capitalized by lifting a shot over keeper Mia Pongratz.

Moments later, McKenna Sylvester sent a free kick into the VCU box, and Mie Carstensen headed the ball on target. Pongratz made the initial save, but Sarah Yee was able to get a left foot on the rebound and knock it across for the goal.

VCU broke through in the 48th minute. Keira McCloskey scored off an assist from Isabelle Franklin. That was all the Rhody defense allowed. Keeper Dani Eden made three saves to help URI win and advance.
