CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Rhode Island will be well represented at the 2025 ITA Division I Women's New England Regional Championships, which begin play Thursday.
Hosted by Harvard, the ITA New England's features both a singles draw and a doubles draw that will be held from Thursday, Oct. 9 through Tuesday, Oct. 14. Rhode Island will have five players competing in the singles draw. Senior
Nikki Fernando is in the main draw, while senior
Sophie Herrman, sophomores
Grace Darcy and
Anastasia Pettersson and freshman
Kajsa Helgesen all earned spots in the qualification draw.
This is an increase for the Rams, who had four players at the tournament in each of the last three seasons. In the 2024 ITA New England's singles tournament. Herrman was in the main draw, while Fernando and
Katharina Spieth both played their way from the qualification draw into the main tournament.
Klara Nelander also played in the qualification draw.
Herrman is making her fourth career appearance at the New England's, where she has played well during her career. She has five career singles victories in the tournament, including a run to the Round of 32 in in 2023. Fernando is making her third appearance at the tournament and has a career mark of 3-2 there.
Darcy, Pettersson and Helgesen all are playing at New England's for the first time.
In addition to the singles play, the teams of Fernando/Helgesen ad Darcy/Pettersson will play in the main draw of the doubles tournament. Fernando and Helgesen received a No. 9 seed in the 64-team draw.
