Box Score

LAKE NONA, Fla.
- For the fourth year in a row, Rhode Island advanced to the second round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship. The No. 6-seeded Rams eliminated No. 11 George Mason, 4-1 Wednesday night at the USTA National Campus.

Rhody (12-10) will take on No. 3 Richmond in the quarterfinals Thursday night.

Rhode Island took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Nikki Fernando and Kajsa Helgesen were the first team to finish, knocking off Cenan Liu and Mary Young 6-3. Shortly after that, Sophie Herrman and Ava Grnja clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over Noelle Talarak and Ravaka Noemie Ramanantoanina.

For Fernando and Helgesen, it was their 19th win together this season. The only player in program history with more doubles wins in one season was Amanda Barletta, who had 25 doubles wins during the 2007-08 season.

Rhody also led at No. 2 doubles, where Grace Darcy and Anastasia Pettersson were up 5-3 when play was stopped.

Rhode Island took the opening set in five of the six singles matches, establishing leads everywhere except No. 4 singles. Nikki Fernando made it 2-0 with a straight-set win over Maitree Rout at No. 2 singles. After taking the first set 6-3, Fernando dominated the second set 6-1

George Mason (8-11) got its first point at No. 4 singles, as Mary Young beat Kajsa Helgesen in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Anastasia Pettersson got the Rams within a point of the win with a straight-set victory over Brooklyn Siegel. After breezing through the first set 6-2, Pettersson was down 5-4 in the second. However, she battled back and took the set 7-5.

Sophie Herrman ended things with a win at No. 3 singles. Going against Maya Bayat, Herrman battled to take the first set, 6-4. She wore Bayat down in the second set, winning 6-2 to second Rhody to the quarterfinals.
