How it Happened
Dayton (22-6, 17-0 A-10) put its powerful attack on display, sweeping Rhode Island 25-11, 25-17, 25-14 to take the first of two matches between the teams this weekend.
Rhode Island (5-24, 2-15 Atlantic 10) managed to hit .221 as a team, but it was successful on just 31-of-73 sideout chances as it could not slow the Flyers down.
Set One - Dayton 25, Rhode Island 11
Dayton overpowered Rhody in the first set, hitting .577 as a team, recording 17 kills with just two errors in 26 attacks. Viktoria Wahlgren had 13 assists as she orchestrated a smooth offense. Kamryn Hunt delivered six kills in the opening minutes of the match, helping Dayton jump out to an 11-5 lead and forcing Rhode Island to call a time out. The Flyers never slowed down, eventually ending the set with a block from Wahlgren and Liana Sarkissian.
Set Two - Dayton 25, Rhode Island 17
The Flyers jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the set, but Rhody chipped away and pulled back within 10-8 to force a Dayton timeout.
Havyn Rolle and
Chloe Abuto combined on a block to make it a one-point score. Rhody also got within one after an Abuto kill made it 11-10. From there, Dayton scored three straight points to establish a 14-10 lead and force a URI timeout. The scored stayed close until a Dayton attack error got URI within 18-16. From there, the Flyers ended the set with a 7-1 spurt to take a 2-0 lead.
Set Three - Dayton 25, Rhode Island 14
Dayton steadily pulled away in the third set, hitting .500 as a team. The Flyers had 17 kills in 34 swings without committing an error. This allowed them to put the match away in three sets.
