How it HappenedÂ
Rhode Island hung with Rider, but a five-goal fourth quarter by the visitors was the deciding factor in a 13-12 loss Saturday afternoon.Â
The Rams struck first in the opening minute. Carolyn Kirk netted her first career goal off an assist from Caitlin Dellecave to put the Rams up with an early 1-0 lead. Rider answered with a goal from Toni Gismondi to even the score, but Rhode Island scored two straight goals from Sami MacDonald and Calli Dunn to give Rhody a 3-1 lead. Rider scored two goals of their own to even it at 3-3 after Gismondi scored her second of the day. Rhode Island took back the lead after MJ Timpanaro scored off a Dunn assist (4-3), but Rider netted two goals in the final 30 seconds of the quarter for the 5-4 lead after the first period.Â
The lead continued to trade between Rhode Island and the Broncs. Rider went up by as many as two goals in the second period (7-5), but Rhody was able to manage a goal from Caralie Basuel with 6:44 left in the quarter to go into the break down one (7-6).Â
The Rams came out of halftime strong, rallying off two straight goals to put URI on top for the first time since the first period (8-7). The lead didn't hold for long, as Rider answered with the equalizer at 6:55. Rhode Island built a two-goal lead to go into the final 15 of play: first a shot from Heidi Albrecht at 2:03 before Danielle McHugh connected on a successful free position attempt with one second remaining in the quarter.Â
The fourth was all the Broncs, as the visitors scored three straight goals to take a 11-10 lead in the first five minutes of the period. Dunn managed a goal to tie it at 11, but the Rider offense continued to push its lead with two more scores. Dunn had her third goal of the game in the final 90 seconds, but it wasn't enough for the Rams as they suffered their first loss of the young season.
