How it Happened
Danielle McHugh scored five goals and Rhode Island's defense stifled Farleigh Dickinson all day long as the Rams won 14-7 Saturday afternoon.
McHugh scored once in each quarter as part of a steady offense for the Rams. After FDU led 3-2 after a back-and-forth first quarter, it was all Rhode Island from there as URI won a road match for the first time in program history.
FDU scored the first goal of the day four minutes in when Brielle McInaw found the back of the net, starting a back-and-forth opening quarter as the lead traded hands two more times. Back-to-back free position goals for Rhode Island by
Caralie Basuel at 9:16 and then
Danielle McHugh at 6:23 gave the Rams their first lead. The Knights responded less than a minute later when Adriana Mavlios scored off an assist from Riley Eaton. The teams remained deadlocked at 2-2 until McInaw's second tally of the match put Farleigh Dickinson up 3-2 with 1:43 to go in the first.
Rhode Island dominated the second quarter, blanking the Knights while scoring four unanswered goals. After McHugh scored for the second time,
Caitlin Dellecave added a goal at 11:04 of the second to put the Rams back in front, 4-3. Basuel's second free position goal padded the lead with 9:29 to go in the second, as Rhody continued to control play.
Brinley Myers produced the final goal of the half when she intercepted a pass by FDU goalie Skylar Goodman and had a breakaway to an unattended net just under the 4:00 mark, putting Rhody in front, 6-3.
Myers scored again 90 seconds into the second half, and a free position goal by
MJ Timpanaro made it six straight goals for the Rams. Farleigh Dickinson finally ended the run when Riley Eaton scored a free position goal to make it 8-4 at 12:13 of the third. It snapped a scoreless stretch of nearly 20 minutes of clock time for the Knights. Each team added one more goal in the quarter, sending the teams to the final stanza with Rhode Island leading, 9-5.
McHugh's fourth goal of the game put Rhody up by five just over two minutes into the fourth. Julia Corry scored for FDU off an assist from McInaw. FDU got possession right back when URI got a green card on the ensuing draw control, but the Knights could not capitalize. Rhody's
Calli Dunn made it hurt when she sliced through the middle of the defense and scored with 6:56 to go, once again making it a five-goal game at 11-6. Fittingly, it was McHugh scoring again with 5:57 left to effectively ice the win.
