How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball held off a late-game rally by its hosts VCU for a 15-11 win on Saturday afternoon at The Diamond.

Though URI (10-8, 2-0 A-10) entered the bottom of the ninth with a comfortable 15-5 advantage, the home team refused to quit. VCU (4-14, 0-2 A-10) quickly loaded up the bases before reliever Manny Santos was able to record an out and then put up five straight runs to end his stay on the mound. Nate Fletcher received the call to the bullpen and allowed one of the inherited runners to score before ending the game.

Rhody had built its lead early, scoring eight unanswered runs across the opening three innings. Anthony DePino and Brody McKenzie scored two runs apiece in the initial spurt, helping put the Rams out in front.

After getting on the board with a solo shot in the fourth, VCU hung a crooked number in the fifth with a four-spot that cut Rhode Island's edge down to 8-5.

Following two scoreless frames, DJ Perron kicked off another hit parade in the sixth when he doubled down the left field line to drive in Reece Moroney. URI added four total runs in that inning before plating three more in the eighth.

While the hosts made things interesting in the ninth, Rhode Island nixed the comeback to secure its league-opening series.
