How it Happened
A big second quarter created separation that Rhode Island could not overcome as it fell to St. Bonaventure 22-10 Saturday afternoon.
The opening period was a wild back-and-forth affair. St. Bonaventure jumped out quickly with a goal from Brooke Piper less than a minute into the match. Tori Nascimento made it 2-0 with a free position goal two minutes later. Rhody's
Brinley Myers evened things up with two goals in a span of 19 seconds.
The Rams took their first lead when
Caitlin Dellecave scored off an assist from Myers. Piper's second goal of the match tied the score again for the Bonnies, but Myers continued her strong play, netting her third goal of the quarter to once again put Rhode Island in front, 4-3, with 4:18 left in the quarter.
From there, St. Bonaventure scored six straight goals. The Bonnies scored the final three goals of the first quarter, then outscored Rhody 6-1 in the second quarter behind four tallies by Tori Nascimento. By halftime, Rhode Island trailed 12-5.
URI scored two of the first three goals to start the second half as Myers and
Calli Dunn both scored. That pulled Rhody within 13-7, but that was as close as the score would get. St. Bonaventure outscored Rhody 9-3 the rest of the way to earn the victory.
