How it Happened
The Rhode Island baseball team dropped the second game of its doubleheader against New Mexico, 10-9, to complete the series at Santa Ana Star Field on Sunday evening.
Rhody (4-7) had the tying run 90 feet away in the top of the ninth but was unable to bring
DJ Perron, who had drawn a four-pitch walk, home. URI did manage to plate one run in the frame thanks to
Rob Butler's infield single, but the Lobos' (8-5) closer struck out a pinch-hitter to finish the game.
Though Rhode Island found itself down by as much as 7-1 just three innings into the game, the team chipped away at the deficit by scoring five combined runs over the fourth and fifth before
Anthony DePino's solo shot tied the score at 7-7 in the sixth.
A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame got the run back for New Mexico, but Butler delivered a double that drove in
Eric Genther to once again knot up the score in the top of the seventh (8-8).
An RBI fielder's choice and a single poked through the left side allowed the home team to regain the lead with two more runs. After a scoreless eighth for both sides, the Rams put their first two batters on in the top of the ninth with a seemingly good chance to get a rally going but unfortunately the team failed to capitalize.

- Senior Anthony DePino was 1-for-5 and credited with two RBI.
- Junior Nicholas Toro was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
- Following redshirt sophomore Braeden Perry's 2.0-inning start, URI used four additional arms out of the bullpen.
- With the win, New Mexico secured the series. Though Rhode Island won the opener on Friday night, the Lobos took the next three games.
