How it Happened
Jeremy Urena tossed Rhode Island's first complete game in nearly three years to lead the Rams to an 8-2 victory over George Washington Friday afternoon. Rhody stayed red hot, winning its ninth consecutive game as it improved to 13-8 overall and 4-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
After getting touched up for two runs on two hits in the top of the second, Urena (4-0) was dominant the rest of the way. He faced just one batter above the minimum over his final seven innings of work while striking out four and issuing zero walks.
With Urena handling GW (10-11, 1-3 A-10) on the mound, URI scored five runs between the third and fifth innings to claim the lead.
Rob Butler and
Anthony DePino executed a double steal for Rhode Island's first run in the bottom of the third. An inning later, Rhody had runners on second and third with one down when Butler hit a grounder to shortstop. A poor throw allowed
Jack Hopko to come in from third with the game-tying run.
In the fifth inning, Hopko's RBI single scored
Reece Moroney to give URI its first lead, which it never relinquished. Two more runs came in as Rhody pushed its lead to 5-2. Three runs in the bottom of the eighth – highlighted by a run-scoring triple off the bat of DePino iced the win for the Rams.
