How it Happened
A dominant third quarter paved the way for Rhode Island to win its first Atlantic 10 match, as the Rams knocked off George Washington 17-12 Wednesday.
The Rams – who snapped a three-match losing streak – led 10-8 at halftime. During the first two quarters, neither side led by more than two goals at any point. That changed early in the third quarter when
Calli Dunn scored a free position goal to give Rhody an 11-8 lead.
GW responded with a man-down goal when a URI turnover led to a breakaway for Katie Fullowan, who buried the shot to get the visitors back within two goals. From there, Rhode Island scored the final three goals of the quarter, as
Brinley Myers sandwiched two goals around a score from
Kate Cumins to put the Rams up 14-9 heading to the final quarter.
The Revolutionaries scored the first two goals of the fourth to pull back within three goals, but Rhody quickly squelched any thoughts of a comeback. Cumins scored twice and Dunn once during a 3-0 spurt that pushed the lead back to six goals. From there, the final result was never in doubt.
