How it Happened
A six-run rally in the top of the seventh broke open what had been a solid pitcher's duel as Saint Louis beat Rhode Island 8-0 to sweep a doubleheader Monday.
The visiting Billikens (22-19, 11-5 A-10) held a slight 2-0 lead after six innings as SLU's Isabel Royle (9-11) and URI's
Avery Vale-Cruz (2-3) were both strong in the circle. However, Saint Louis batted around in the final inning, using four hits, three walks and a hit batsman to piece together a six-run outburst.
A bases-loaded walk for Allie Marietta, a two-run single by Natalie Sullivan and run-scoring singles by Abby Mallo and Jane Kaniecki keyed the rally. Kaniecki had a double to start the frame, giving her two hits in the inning.
Despite outhitting Saint Louis 4-3 through the first six innings, Rhode Island (9-25, 3-11 A-10) could not get any runs across for the fourth straight game.
