How it Happened
Despite getting the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, Rhode Island fell 3-0 to Saint Louis in the opening game of a doubleheader at the URI Softball Complex on Monday.
Julianne Torres (double) and Natalie Meleitzke (hit by pitch) reached for the Rams (9-24, 3-10 A-10) in the frame but the Billikens' Taylor Hochman preserved her shutout.
For the visitors, a trio of crooked numbers was the difference in their narrow victory. SLU (21-19, 10-5 A-10) first got on the board in the top of the third when a long single plated a run. The team then loaded up the bases in a threat to do further damage, but
Ashley Hibbard got out of the jam.
After issuing a walk and plunking a batter to start the sixth, Hibbard was relieved by
Katie Zaunn who allowed one of the inherited runners to score before ending the inning. A single up the middle tacked on the Billikens' final run in the seventh.
Rhode Island left five runners on base over the last three frames, struggling to answer SLU's slow attack. Though the team had a glimmer of hope in the seventh, it was snuffed out by Hochman.

- As a team, the Rams struck out just once.
- Junior Ashley Hibbard (3-11) fanned three batters in her 5.0-inning start. She scattered three hits while issuing two walks and was tagged with two runs.
- Senior Katie Zaun allowed one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
