How it Happened
Rhode Island completed a three-game sweep of Saint Louis, rallying from a three-run deficit to beat the Billikens 6-4 Sunday afternoon. It was the fifth three-game series sweep of the season for the Rams.
Saint Louis used some two-out magic for an early lead. After the first two batters were retired, the Billikens got a single from Chase Beattie. Brendan Stressler followed with a gapper to right center for a double that allowed Beattie to come all the way around for a 1-0 lead.
Neither team scored again until the fifth inning. After a Riley Iffrig walk, Beattie tripled to right center for a 2-0 lead. Beattie then scored when Stressler hit a fielder's choice to the mound and Rhode Island was unable to get Beattie at the plate.
Rhode Island finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth.
Ryan King led off the frame with a solo home run to left field.
Eric Genther singled and eventually scored on a two-out single by
Jack Hopko, trimming the deficit to 3-2.
In the top of the sixth,
Anthony DePino kept it a one-run game. With two outs and runners on first and second, DePino made a diving stop of a Beattie line drive, preventing extra bases and at least one run for Saint Louis.
The play loomed large when the Rams put together a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to take their first lead of the day.
DJ Perron singled,
Nic Notarangelo was hit by a pitch and
Ryan Thompson walked to load the bases.
Scott Penney hit a slow roller to second base. Saint Louis second baseman Sitzman collided with Thompson, who was running for second base.
After initially ruling Thompson out for interference, the umpires huddled up and ultimately ruled Thompson safe. It was decided that Sitzman initiated the contact and that Thompson did not impede Sitzman's ability to field the ball. Perron scored on the play to tie the score.
Nicholas Toro followed with a two-run single to left field to drive in Notarangelo and Thompson. A King single brought Penney around to cap the rally and give Rhody a 6-3 lead.
Saint Louis got a solo home run from Ian Halverson to lead off the eighth inning, and Kamaehu Sanchez walked to bring the tying to the plate. URI closer
Joe Sabbath was called on, but he walked his first batter, Austen Nueweg to put the tying runs on base with the top of the order at the plate. Sabbath induced a pop out by Ian Blazier and a comebacker by Iffrig to get two outs before blowing Beattie away with three straight fastballs to end the threat with now runs.
The Rams added two insurance runs in the eighth. Thompson singled to drive in Perron. Penney followed with a sacrifice fly to bring pinch runner
Adonis Medina in for an 8-4 lead.
That was more than enough for Sabbath, who set the Billikens down 1-2-3 with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the ninth to put the finishing touches on the win.
