KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island was well represented on the 2025 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis All-Conference Team, with four Rams combining for six league honors.
Freshman
Katharina Spieth was both the A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie Award and a first-team selection. Junior
Nikki Fernando was named to both the second team and to the academic all-conference team. Junior
Sophie Herrman and senior
Klara Nelander also earned all-academic honors, as Rhode Island claimed three of the six spots for the league.
In earning the A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie, Spieth is the first Rhode Island player in program history to win a major year-end award. She played No. 1 singles for Rhode Island, going 19-7 overall and 12-2 in dual matches. She and Fernando also were 9-8 together at No. 1 doubles. She was a four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week.
Fernando led Rhode Island with 20 singles wins, going 20-7 overall. She played mostly at No. 3 singles, going 14-1 in that spot. Heading into her senior season, Fernando already has 50 career singles victories and 49 doubles wins. In the classroom, she has a 3.96 grade-point average in molecular neuroscience. Fernando is a volunteer research assistant for URI's molecular neuroscience research lab.
Herrman earned academic all-conference for the second straight season. In addition to going 5-13 in singles play - mostly at No. 2 - she teamed with Nelander to go 13-7 in doubles play, including a 12-3 mark at No. 3 doubles. Herrman has a 4.0 GPA in cell and molecular biology. A research assistant with the Oaks Lab, studying nutrition and long-term health, she studies the effects of nutritional disparities on health outcomes throughout the life span. Additionally, Herrman is an Honors Program Ambassador, a Student Athlete Orientation Leader, a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Representative and a Peer Mentor for College of Environment and Life Sciences. She also is a volunteer tutor with UPchieve, working with students from low-income backgrounds in various subjects, including English, Chemistry, Biology, and College Counseling.
A two-year team captain, Nelander went 15-5 in singles play, including 1-0 at No. 5 and 11-1 at No. 6. She and Herrman were 13-7 in doubles play, including a 12-3 mark at No. 3 doubles. Nelander led a turnaround of the program, with the team going 29-13 over the last two seasons. Academically she earned Dean's List recognition eight times while earning a 4.0 GPA in Finance. A member of the URI Business and Finance Club, Nelander was invited to Harvard University for its National Conference for Women in Finance.
Rhode Island has earned five A-10 Academic All-Conference selections in two seasons with
Jonas Brobeck as the head coach.
