How it Happened
Fordham broke open a quality pitcher's duel late as it shut out Rhode Island 6-0 in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

URI's Brooke Gerry and Fordham's Emilee Watkins were both brilliant in the circle. For the first four innings, the two pitchers traded blank frames, both shutting down the opposition.

With two out and a runner on in the top of the fifth, Fordham (26-24, 16-9 A-10) was able to break through. Sydney Wells drilled a long home run to left field for a 2-0 lead.

It was all the run support needed by Watkins (8-6). She scattered six hits by Rhody (14-34, 7-17 Atlantic 10). URI managed to get runners on in five of its seven turns at bat – including multiple runners in the first and fourth – but Watkins was able to consistently get the outs she needed.
