KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island Baseball's
Eric Genther has signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees on the heels of the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft.
He is the second Ram to either sign or be drafted by an MLB organization this year, as teammate
Anthony DePino was
picked up by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round on Monday afternoon.
A four-year starting outfielder for URI, Genther's name is all over the program record book. Having played the second-most career games of any Ram (214), the Drexel Hill, Pa. native finished his tenure in the program's career top-10 in numerous categories including runs batted in (159, second), runs scored (184, third) and hits (250, fifth).
A two-time Atlantic 10 All-Academic selection, Genther led the team in both batting average (.361) and hits (86) as a senior. The only player to start all 60 of Rhody's games in 2025, he tallied three assists from the outfield. As a team captain, he helped the Rams win both the A-10 regular season and tournament titles. By winning the latter, URI secured a spot at the Baton Rouge Regional as part of the NCAA Tournament.
Genther is the third Ram to sign as a free agent since the 2020 season, joining former teammate Addison Kopack (San Diego Padres, 2023) and Jackson Coutts (Washington Nationals, 2020). Under head coach
Raphael Cerrato, 11 different players have now earned professional opportunities within the MLB.
