How it Happened
Rhode Island rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to salvage a 2-2 draw with Iona in the season opener for both sides Thursday.

After an uneventful first half, the floodgates opened after the break. Iona struck first in the 55th minute on a left-footed shot from Calle Sjoberg from well outside the box. Rhody responded nine minutes later when the Rams capitalized on a miscommunication by two Iona players, leading to a Rhody throw in. URI got the ball down the right side line off the throw in, and Sinan Bruning lined a shot that was stopped by Iona keeper Alves Schmelz. Bruning got the rebound and set up Daniel Goba with a cross that tied the match.

The rapid fire action continued as Iona came right back four minutes later with a goal by Storm Schmidt Hollensted.

With five minutes to go, Parker Vasic expertly volleyed a shot from just outside the box into the far corner of the net. A long throw in by Connor Froberg led to a scramble in front of the Iona net. A low shot by Maksim Kalina was blocked by a Gael into the air, and Vasic one-time a bullet into the upper corner of the far side giving Rhody the tie.
