How it Happened
Rhode Island battled but could not keep pace with in-state Brown, falling 3-2 Monday night. The loss snapped URI's three-match winning streak.
Brown built a two-goal lead within the first 19 minutes of the match. In the sixth minute, Audrey Lam sent a corner into the box that Ella Weil got her head on. Naya Cardoza knocked the rebound into the box for a 1-0 lead. In the 19th minute, Joy Okonye controlled a long service and sent a cross to an open Weil, who sent a left-footed shot inside the far post to pad the lead for the hosts.
Rhode Island cut the deficit in half with a pretty set piece in the 29th minute.
Kyra Samalonis sent a curling pass to the far side of the box, and
Mie Carstensen was able to get above a Brown defender and head the ball across the end line.
Brown nearly added to its lead in the 65th minute when Angelina Vargas headed a cross from Okonye just outside the right post. The Bears did extend their lead a few minutes later when Vargas broke through two Rhody defenders and sent a cross to Ayla Sahin, who one-timed a touch inside the far post.
McKenna Sylvester kept the Rams close when she lined a left-footed shot just under the crossbar in the 75th minute. Taking a throw in from
Jill Rosenfeld deep in the Brown end, Sylvester shielded a defender with her body, turned to her right and fired a shot over the dive of Brown keeper Bella Schopp.
Unfortunately Rhode Island was unable to get the equalizer in the final minutes.
