How it Happened
Rhode Island won its Atlantic 10 opener at Saint Joseph's, shutting out the Hawks 1-0 on their home turf.
The offense was even through the first 45 minutes of play. The teams both added six shots in the first half, but despite the shots neither team was able to break through. Rhody and St. Joe's were knotted scoreless 0-0 going into the half.
It didn't take long for the visitors to get it going in the second half. The Rams drew a corner kick two minutes into the period. Lauren MacDonald had an initial shot that was saved and when St. Joe's keeper Sage Baillargeon attempted to clear the ball, it was intercepted by the Rams. A cross by Mie Carstensen found McKenna Sylvester inside the box and the Rams were on the board.
Rhody was able to maintain possession in the final minutes of the game, preventing any shots by the Hawks and handing the hosts their second home loss of the season.Â
